Summary This study is about the right of children to participate. The purpose of the study is to study how the teacher arranges for the children to express themselves, in a way they becomes more involved in learning activities in kindergarten. Research question I have tried to answer is: "What characterizes the communication between the children and teacher in the planned learning activities in kindergarten?" In this study, the democratic nature of the practice of children's right to participation is emphasized, and democratic thinking is seen as a prerequisite for children's participation. Theory section highlights thus both democratic thinking that an overall perspective and specific element of communication that are central to research question. The study is based on a qualitative approach and observation method. I have used unstructured observation without defined categories in advance and been so open to new patterns or other elements than those I knew about already. Observation was conducted at eight planned learning activities, divided into two teachers and small groups of children aged 4-5 years. My findings can be interpreted that children's right to participation set child's perspective in focus of learning activities among the oldest children in the kindergarten. The children's needs and wishes get an important role, and questions, clarifications and confirmations are key elements in the communication between educators and children. Educator uses little dissemination, extensions and suggestions on the topic, and educator's role as a knowledge intermediary, interpreted as obscured in the learning activities. The study shows the element of communication that can, on the basis of both theory and empirical evidence, look to have significance for children's participation in learning activities. The democratic aspect is emphasized in the study and highlights the meaning of the educator conscious attitude as a pervasive element in relation to what one wants to achieve and how. Educators show interest in child's perspective. At the same time, both time for reflection and emphasis on contrast and diversity that are in the group of children, are little used. The study highlights the need to discuss the concept of children's participation, in terms of what are the reasons when it is expressed as a democratic value, and what significance it will have for the work in kindergartens and competencies required.en
