Abstract: This thesis has explored tensions in the profession identity of social workers from different workplaces through qualitative research. Several social workers in Norway experience a lackof confidence in their competency pertaining to social work and the workplace. The health and care sector are facing several challenges, with the number of qualified personnel in thebranch being one of them. The population is increasing, and so is the number of illness anddiagnoses which are more complex. This has led to a greater demand on the competence and quality of services provided by healthcare and social workers, as well as their ability to handle the service needs, inter-professional cooperation and efficiency. This thesis has primarily focused on how social workers experience their professional identity along with their use of discretion. Through semi-structured interviews of social workers, distributed throughout a variety of workplaces, this thesis has found that several tensions exist within the profession identity of social workers. Using Lipsky’s (2010) theory about street level bureaucracy, this thesis illuminates the experiences and thoughts of seven social workers. To conclude, tensions exist between personal, collective and professional identities. Through Lipsky’s’ (2010) theory of street-level bureaucracy and theory of professions, it is also demonstrated that for the profession of social work there remains tensions between the recipient and the state, science with contradictory logic, tensions between autonomy and management, discretion and accountability, common ethics and professional ethicsen_US
