Abstract It is evident according to science that violence and abuse against children and youth is a significant societal problem. These cases are often hidden, kept secret and go unreported. Today we are not lacking in knowledge about this and its effects. However, if the child welfare services are to feel secure enough to go through with necessary conversations with children – professionally justifiable – there will be an increasing need for more knowledge on conversation methodology. Therefore, this study seeks to answer the research question: “In what way can a child welfare consultant best create a safe space for children to openly talk about violence and abuse?”. A safe space requires building a good relation to the child. What if the child shares serious details about its experience? The consultant has a professional role by acting according to law, and take care of the child in a stable, secure, and empathetic manner. For this study I have used theory about children at risk, developmental trauma, resilience, relations, and the child conversation DCM. The research presents the use of the childconversation DCM, children exposed to violence and abuse, as well as the child’s own participation with the child welfare services. It will be important that the child welfare consultant is enlightened about the possible stress and hardship the child might be going through as a consequence of what they have experienced. The consultant is expected to be a person of self-awareness when it comes to the way they present themselves, as well as how they build relationships. Only then will a child welfare consultant be able to properly use the method for childconversation.en_US
