Tolkemedierte samtalar. Ein kvalitativ studie om barnvernstilsette si oppleving av å nytte tolk

Abstract

Som profesjonsutøvar innan sosialt arbeid ligg vårt mandat forankra i det Yrkesetiske grunnlagsdokument og som vårt samfunnsoppdrag er vi forplikta til bistå menneskjer som har behov for hjelp, for å sikre gode levekår og livskvalitet. Vi vil i denne oppgåva studere korleis barnevernstilsette opplev å nytte tolk i arbeidet. Vi vil undersøke korleis ein kommunisere med kvarande utan fellesspråk, og korleis dette kan påverke samarbeidet mellom profesjonsutøvar og klient. I tilllegg vil vi finne ut om det er noko form for uliksap mellom dei tilsette som har lang fartstid i barnevernstenesta og dei som har arbeidd i kortare tid. Det vart gjennomført ein studie basert på fokuserte intervju med fem barnevernstilsette, vidare vart materialet analysert med induktiv metode. Spørsmåla var knytt til den subjektive opplevinga dei har til å nytte tolk og det er deira refleksjonar og opplevingar. Vi har basert empirien på kommunikasjonsteori og aktuell forsking på feltet. Denne oppgåva vil sette lys på nokre av utfordringane ein som profesjonsutøvar står i når ein må nytte tolk i samtale, vidare vil vi drøfte korleis tolk påverka samarbeidet og korleis kommunikasjonen blir tilpassa når ein ikkje har felles språk. Resultata gir ei skildring av ulike måtar å handtere den non-verbale kommunikasjonen på og korleis samarbeidet blir påverka av å ha eit tredje element med som tolken blir. Konklusjonen er at dei som har arbeidd lenge i barnevernstenesta opplever samarbeidet og kommuniksjonen som vanskeleg og at den blir i stor grad påverka av å nytte tolk. Dette i motsetnad til dei informantane med kortare erfaring som gjev uttrykk for at den ikkje blir påverka av tolkebruk. Vi ser og at for å lukkast med gode tolkesamtalar er ein avhengige av at både profesjonsutøvar, klient og tolk saman bidreg,men at hovedansvaret ligg hjå profesjonsutøvaren.

Abstract As a professional in social work our mandate is anchored in the Yrkesetiske grunnlagsdokument and in our social mission we are commited to assist people who need help, to ensure good living conditions and quality of life. In this task we will study how the child welfare service experiences the use of an interpreter. We will examine how to communicate with each other without a common anguage and how it can affect the collaboration between professional and client. In addition, we will find out if there is any kind of difference between employees with a long career in the child welfare service and those who have worked for a shorter time. A study was conducted based on focus interviews with five child welfare workers. Furthermore, the material was analyzes by inductiv method. The questions were related to the subjective experience they have of using an interpreter. It is on their reflections and experiences we have based our empirical evidence about communication theory and current research in the field. This assignment will shed kight on some of the challenges yoy as a professional face when you have to use an interpreter. Furtheremore, we will discuss how interpreteres affect collaboration and how communication is adapted when there is no common language. The results provide a description of different ways of dealing with non-verbal communication and how the collaboration is affected by having a third element, which is the interpreter. The conclusion is that those who have worked for a long time in the child welfare service find collaboration and communication difficult and that it is not affected by the use of interpreters. We also see that in order to be successful with good interpreter coversations, one is dependent on both professional, client and the interpreter contributing together, but the main resposibility lies with the professional.
