dc.description.sponsorshipummary This master’s thesis primarily addresses awareness and knowledge about the official norm (correct spelling and grammar) of Nynorsk, one of the two written forms of the Norwegian language. My informants are student teachers who grew up in parts of Norway where Nynorsk is established as the majority language, but have moved to the cities of Oslo or Trondheim to study. In addition to exploring their actual normative knowledge by testing the informants’ choices when writing, I have interviewed a selection of the informants about their attitudes towards the freedom of choice between different forms within the language norm, and how this freedom of choice can be handled didactically. My research questions have been as follows:  What kind of Nynorsk do we find in the writing of student teachers in Oslo and Trondheim who were brought up in a ‘Nynorsk area’ of Norway?  What do their choices when writing tell us about their knowledge and awareness of the norm?  What kind of attitudes do they have towards the current Nynorsk norm? Several of the variables tested are linked to topics that were discussed during the revision of the Nynorsk norm in 2012. The findings of my study suggest that most of my informants are not top-level when it comes to knowledge about the norm. All of them break the norm from time to time, and it can be hard to locate an apparent system in these breaks. Still, there are variables where one could expect more variation, but where all the informants make the exact same, and correct, choices. When it comes to attitudes the main informants have different opinions on what is the best kind of norm for a language society, a wide or a narrow one. However, all three of them believe that there is a pedagogical/didactical advantage when teaching and learning Nynorsk that the norm is narrowen
